Good evening,

Let me begin by acknowledging the history of this region. We gather this evening on the traditional, unceded territory of the Mi'kmaw peoples. With this acknowledgement, we recognize the diverse histories and cultures of the Beothuk, Mi'kmaq, Innu and Inuit of this province. Honouring all First Peoples is reconciliation in action.

It is with great pride that I stand before you to recognize the history and the contributions of The Royal Newfoundland Regiment. This regiment holds a unique place in our nation's story, as the oldest regiment in all of Canada.

Throughout history, members of The Royal Newfoundland Regiment have faced adversity and have demonstrated courage and resilience.

The bravery and sacrifice of the Regiment's soldiers during the First World War marked the beginning of their distinguished service. And tonight, we pay tribute to the memory of those who marched towards Beaumont-Hamel into a hail of fire. We must remember the events of that day and the profound loss of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Tomorrow, on the 100th anniversary of the National War Memorial, we will lay to rest the Unknown Newfoundland Soldier. This soldier represents the contributions and sacrifices of not just one, but all soldiers who never made it home. While their name may not be known, their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Today, you continue to serve our country, whether it be in humanitarian missions or peacekeeping efforts around the world. And, right here in your home province, you support your communities when needed. You have been essential in providing support for disaster relief following Hurricane Igor, historic snowstorms, and Hurricane Fiona.

On behalf of all Canadians and as commander-in-chief, I extend my deepest gratitude to all members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, past and present.

Thank you.
