Parliament, Wednesday, 30 October 2024 - The Chairperson of Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Ian Cameron, has welcomed yesterday's resolution by the National Assembly that the Portfolio Committee on Police is a competent structure to carry out oversight over extortion-related crimes.
"The committee has already done extensive work to monitor work by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) and over the efforts of police on extortion-related-crimes. The committee has put in structures and framework on how it will undertake its work, which includes delineating stakeholders that will be engaged, collaborations necessary and set aside time to undertake oversight to the most-affected provinces," Mr Cameron emphasised.
The committee is of the view that extortion remain a worrying crime trend and affects not only businesses but households and schools. The work that the committee has already undertaken and the plans it has put in place have demonstrated the capacity of the committee to carry out oversight over efforts to fight extortions.
