ELGIN, IL - Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) awarded the City of Elgin $959,752 in federal community project funding he secured to help fund the city's efforts to replace lead service lines. The project, which will target low-to-moderate-income households during the first phase, is funded by congressional appropriations secured by Congressman Krishnamoorthi in March's bipartisan government spending package. The funding will be used as part of Elgin's program to replace roughly 900 lead service lines annually and 13,500 service lines within the next 40 years in the city to avoid the health risks such lines may ultimately pose.
"The people of Elgin should be able to turn on their taps and know their water is clean, safe, and free of lead," Congressman Krishnamoorthi said. "Unfortunately, older water service lines containing lead pose risks to public health over time. That's why I was proud to secure nearly a million dollars to update Elgin's service lines and help ensure that every Elgin family benefits from safe, modern water service."
