City to Conduct Prescribed Agricultural Burn Today West of South Cherryvale Road and South of South Boulder Road

Boulder community members may notice smoke in southeast Boulder today because of a prescribed burn being conducted by Boulder Fire-Rescue in collaboration with Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) and the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.

The burn will take place on city managed property just west of South Cherryvale Road and south of South Boulder Road. Burn ignition will begin after 10:30 a.m. and will end prior to 3 p.m. Community members may continue to see smoke past 3 p.m. as the fire crews work on extinguishing the prescribed burn. Please do not call 911 to report these burns as they are not emergencies.

The current burn, and remaining burns planned for this year, are agricultural ditch burns. The city conducts agricultural prescribed burning to help maintain open space agricultural properties, including ditches that provide water for open space farming and ranching operations. Prescribed burning in agricultural ditches removes vegetation from important irrigation infrastructure and helps control plant growth and invasive weed species.
