Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp to retire in June 2025

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (July 1, 2024) - After nearly 14 years, Chancellor John Sharp announced that he is retiring as chancellor of the Texas A&M University System on June 30, 2025. Sharp, the longest-serving chancellor in the System's history, sent a letter to constituents on Monday thanking past and present regents, system employees, and elected officials for their years of support.

"Leading this grand enterprise has been one of the great privileges of my life," Sharp said. "I feel a deep sense of gratitude to all of you who have shown confidence in me and contributed to our collective endeavor. Together, we have lifted the Texas A&M System to historic heights."

Prairie View A&M University president & CEO Tomikia P. LeGrande commented on the chancellor's impending retirement, saying, "Chancellor Sharp has been an avid supporter of Prairie View A&M University. His influence with the state legislature was instrumental in helping the University secure its funding for the Agricultural funding match during the 88th legislative session, a condition of PVAMU's 1890 Land-Grant University status. In addition, under his tenure, PVAMU has grown in its campus landscape- with more than $340 million allocated to construction projects. He has been known to say, 'PVAMU is the most beautiful campus in the Texas A&M System.' We join with others throughout the state and nation in thanking Chancellor Sharp for his support of Prairie View A&M University and the Texas A&M system".

Under Sharp's tenure, in the past 12 years, Prairie View has received more than $36 million in research funding allocated from the chancellor's research fund, and the allocation from A&M's permanent endowment has also increased by nearly 150 percent, from $12.1 million in 2011 to $29.9 million in 2023.
