SAN FRANCISCO - The SFPD has been awarded $179,000 in grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), which will aid the department's efforts to reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries on city streets. =

The grant is for the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), which aims to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in collisions involving alcohol and other primary collision factors.

This grant will fund a variety of traffic safety programs, including those emphasizing:

  • Alcohol and drug-impaired driving prevention.
  • Awareness and education for primary crash factors, distracted driving, and night-time seat belt enforcement.
  • Special enforcement operations encouraging motorcycle safety.
  • Educational programs for public awareness in areas with a high number of bicycle and pedestrian crashes.

"The SFPD is committed to enforcing our traffic laws to make our streets safer," said Chief Bill Scott. "I want to thank the Office of Traffic Safety for this important grant funding. We will immediately use this money to crack down on some of our most dangerous traffic violations as we work to achieve Vision Zero."

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
