Tokyo, Japan, December 12, 2024 - Federal Express Corporation, one of the world's largest express transportation companies, has successfully completed a series of clean-up initiatives in local communities removing approximately 525 kilograms of litter in total. This effort is part of the company's ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and community service.
91 FedEx employees collected trash and waste from parks, roads and riverbanks in various locations, including Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba.
As part of the initiative, FedEx collaborated with local non-profit Hands On Tokyo to help reduce ocean plastic pollution. FedEx volunteers collected 28 kilograms along the Arakawa riverbank before it could reach the ocean, contributing to cleaner waterways and a healthier environment.
"Taking care of our environment is a responsibility we all share," said Kei Alan Kubota, managing director of FedEx Japan. "Our employees are passionate about giving back to local communities. This clean-up is just one of many ways we are committed to promoting sustainability and fostering a cleaner, healthier future for the planet."
Plastic waste often accumulates and eventually makes its way to the ocean. The total amount of plastic waste discharged from Japan into the ocean in FY2023 was estimated to reach 27,000 tons. Marine plastic pollution is a critical global issue, driven by growing concerns from harmful effects on wildlife and ecosystems. To improve the situation, the Japanese government has proposed a goal for the international community to eliminate additional pollution from marine plastic waste by 2050.[1]
This clean-up campaign is an integral part of the company's culture where FedEx team members are encouraged to give back to society through volunteer programs through its global community engagement program, FedEx Cares. The company aims to inspire others to organize their own clean-up events, fostering a sense of community responsibility and environmental consciousness.
