Finalists announced for the position of general counsel

The University of New Mexico has announced three finalists for the general counsel position. The finalists include Art Lee, Daniel Jones and John Newsome.

Finalist interviews will include open forums with the campus community and meetings for each candidate with various stakeholders. The open forums will be held in-person and available via Zoom.

A recording of the forums will be available shortly after each session on the General Counsel Search webpage through noon on Nov. 11. Viewers will be required to login using their UNM credentials.

Art Lee currently serves as vice president and deputy general counsel at the University of Arizona where he's responsible for the full range of legal matters relevant to a large, public, R1 university with an academic medical center, NCAA Division 1 athletics, and an international and online presence providing legal advice and general counsel to senior university leadership and administration regarding a diverse array of matters across the entire University of Arizona enterprise.

Daniel Jones - Wednesday, Nov. 6

Daniel Jones is the vice president for Legal Affairs & General Counsel at Florida Atlantic University. He is responsible for serving as legal counsel to the Board of Trustees; providing legal and policy advice to the University President and all senior administrators; directing all litigation and administrative proceedings involving the University at hearing, trial, and appellate levels; supervising and coordinating representation with outside counsel; and assisting in the development of University compliance plans to meet federal and state regulations.

John Newsome - Friday, Nov. 8

John Newsome serves as Strategic Advisor to the President and Provost of the Medical College of Wisconsin and as outside counsel for the Rothman Institute, having previously served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for both organizations. In his current roles, he acts as a strategic partner advising and providing key legal counsel to the President, CEO, the Board of Trustees and senior leaders across all areas of one of the largest privately held providers of orthopedic care in the United States and the academic Department of Orthopedics for the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University; and as the top legal and business advisor to the President and Provost for Wisconsin's only private, free standing health sciences university.
