Tips for Parents of Incoming College Freshmen

Starting college is a big step for students and their parents. Olivet Nazarene University recently hosted a parent panel to help parents navigate this exciting time. Luke Franklin, Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions, kicked off the panel by saying, "We have assembled some people that have already been here, already had this experience." He emphasized the importance of hearing from those who have been through it.

Here's a recap of what was shared to support your incoming freshmen.

Stay Connected
During the event, parents were encouraged to stay connected with their students. Parents were asked to call their kids and say "I love you." This simple gesture helps students feel supported and serves as a reminder and reassurance of the support they have at home.

Independence and Responsibility
College is a time for your student to grow in independence. One panelist, Susan Wolff, who has seen 2 sons through the high-school-to-college transition, advised parents, "It's important for them to learn these skills before they leave for school. Let them make decisions and solve problems, even if they make mistakes. This will help them build confidence and resilience." Encouraging students to handle tasks on their own, like packing and organizing their schedules, helps them develop these essential skills.

Finding Community
Finding a community on campus is crucial for students. Mitchell Greer has a unique opportunity to see his son on campus since he works here as Director of Public Safety. "I remember the first week of school for my oldest, who's now a senior. I looked out into the cafeteria and saw my son eating all alone the first week of school. And I started bawling." He continued, "little did I know, just shortly after that, he found his community." One parent suggested an open door policy, "My son said the same thing about the dorms. He and his roommate would just go and walk around and walk into anyone's room that had their door open."

Encourage your student to keep their dorm room door open, join clubs, or participate in events to meet new friends and build a supportive community.

Supporting From Afar
If you live far from Olivet, it can be tough not being able to help your student in person. Esther Tueck, another panelist, emphasized the importance of students learning to advocate for themselves and solve problems. She said, "encourage them to connect with campus resources, like public safety or their professors." Knowing they have support on campus can give you peace of mind.

Prayer and Faith
For many parents, prayer is a vital part of supporting their student. Susan Wolff recommended the book Your College Student Needs Your Prayers by Monica Renahan, which offers specific ways to pray for your student. "Trust that God is watching over them and guiding their journey," she added.

Practical Tips
Before school starts, give your student tasks to complete on their own, such as shopping for dorm supplies or handling paperwork. Luann Morehart advised, "Encourage them to check their email regularly for important information from the university. These small responsibilities prepare them for greater independence."
