MOFA Spokesperson’s Commentary on Election of Ishiba Shigeru as Japanese Prime Minister and Launch of New Cabinet

1. The government of the Republic of Korea congratulates Ishiba Shigeru, President of the Liberal Democratic Party, on his election as the 102nd Prime Minister of Japan and the launch of the new Cabinet on October 1, 2024.

2. The Republic of Korea and Japan, as partners that share universal values and neighbors that should contribute together to world peace and prosperity, have been cooperating in a wide range of areas based on the solid trust established between the leaders of the two countries, including through the recent active shuttle diplomacy.

3. While maintaining close communication with new Prime Minister Ishiba and his Cabinet, the ROK government, along with the Japanese government, will continue its efforts to establish a more advanced and future-oriented cooperative partnership between the two countries in all areas, including security, economy, and global agendas.
