Following the announcement of the planned acquisition, UAB Medicine and Ascension shared a desire to use a co-branded name at current Ascension St. Vincent's operations and sites of care that honors and embraces the people and culture of St. Vincent's.

"The St. Vincent's name carries a legacy of exceptional care," said UAB Health System CEO Dawn Bulgarella. "By retaining the St. Vincent's name, we honor the 125-year history and legacy of reverent care that St. Vincent's has provided to the Birmingham community. This name also acknowledges the trust and significance that St. Vincent's holds among its patients and the broader community.

At an August 7, 2024, meeting, the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees Executive Committee approved the creation of the UAB St. Vincent's Employment Authority - the entity that will employ current Ascension St. Vincent's caregivers and associates.

The transfer is expected to be finalized in the fall of 2024, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory and canonical approvals. Until that time, UAB Health System and Ascension St. Vincent's will continue normal operations while their teams collaborate to plan the transition.

While UAB St. Vincent's will no longer be a Catholic hospital, St. Vincent's associates and caregivers will continue their great tradition of serving all persons, with special attention to the poor and vulnerable, with holistic care that improves the health of individuals and the community. It is worth noting that while UAB - as a public hospital - is not affiliated with a particular faith, it is committed to spiritual health and pastoral care. UAB offers an interfaith chapel, with professional, board-certified chaplains who offer care and compassion for all people, specific to their faith and religious tradition.
