Seniors’ Advocates Laud House Passage Of Bi-partisan ‘Social Security Fairness Act’

"The U.S. House took a step in the right direction Tuesday night by passing H.R. 82, The Social Security Fairness Act. Introduced by Reps. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) and Garrett Graves (R-LA), this legislation, if enacted, would repeal the unpopular WEP (Windfall Elimination Provision) and GPO (Government Pension Offset), which have unfairly prevented millions of public sector employees (including teachers, firefighters, and police officers) from receiving Social Security benefits. We have long advocated for the repeal of the WEP and GPO provisions, though we would have preferred that Congress take up the more comprehensive improvements in Rep. John Larson's Social Security 2100 Act (which includes WEP & GPO repeal). Nonetheless, tonight's vote was a bipartisan victory for public sector employees and their families, who, like all Americans, deserve to collect the benefits they have earned. We urge the U.S. Senate to join the House in approving this bill". - Max Richtman, President and CEO, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare
