UoG graduates win national award from Royal Television Society

A group of recent University of Gloucestershire graduates have won a national award from the Royal Television Society (RTS) for an inclusive and 'bright and informative' film they made while studying at the University.

Kay Proctor, Katie Stacey, Meg Davies, Will Chapple, Morris Haynes (all BA (Hons) Film Production), Josh Rowe (BA (Hons) Popular Music) and Sam Harris (BA (Hons) Sound and Music Production) won the RTS Student Television Awards 2024 Undergraduate Journalism category for I'll Just Have Cats.

This is the third time in the past six years that graduates from the University's School of Creative Arts have won a national category at theRTS Student Television Awards, along with a number of regional RTS awards.

In the award citation, the judging panel described I'll Just Have Cats, which explores the lack of knowledge within society about how lesbians have babies and the costs involved, as "a really compelling story, with brilliant case studies and outstanding production values."

The panel added: "The storytelling was engaging and used clever devices to hold the audience's interest. This entry was inclusive in every sense of the word and was a very bright and informative watch."

Kay Proctor said: "This documentary was made from the heart to help others, so the awards gave us such a fantastic opportunity to share this message and get the conversations started.

"This project couldn't have been possible without the strong support of our lecturers, families, friends and the great range of equipment we had access to at University of Gloucestershire.

"It gives me more confidence as a documentary filmmaker to know that the work we create has a positive and powerful impact for others who need it and is being recognised for it."

Recent University graduates Aoife Harkin, Kaleigh Pritchard, Meg Griffith and Isaac Lewis (all BA (Hons) Journalism) were nominees in the same category with Angle News Final News Day.

The RTS Student Television Awards showcase the next generation of industry talent, highlighting and recognising the exceptional skills and craftmanship of students across the UK.
