Media Statement: Sports Committee Wishes Boks Well, and Notes with Appreciation Rugby’s Contribution to South African Life

Parliament, Friday, 30 August 2024 - The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture, Mr Joe McGluwa, has wished the Springboks well in the two-test Rugby Championship series against New Zealand, to be held in Johannesburg tomorrow and in Cape Town next week.

This comes after a remodelled Rugby Championship this year was approved for South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Argentina Rugby (SANZAAR, previously known as SANZAR) where unions agreed to shift from a home-and-away model and opted for a traditional test-series approach.

Mr McGluwa also welcomed the Department of Transport's move to enhance transport to and from games with additional new trains.

Mr McGluwa said hosting a Springboks-All Blacks test is a big occasion in the world rugby calendar. "For many, this will feel like a repeat of the World Cup final in France that South Africa won 12-11. This is huge and a massive revisit of the final. New Zealand has always been a great opponent for South Africa, and we can only marvel at the heritage and the history."

"On behalf of the committee, we wish the Springboks well and hope that they win this test series. Success on the rugby field has always unified South Africans and wins against the All Blacks have that special feeling," Mr McGluwa added.

The committee also sent its good wishes to the South African Paralympics team and to the Athletics Under20s currently participating in World Under20 Championship in Lima, Peru.
