Joe Jonas Shares How Nick Jonas Reacted to His New Solo Music

Joe Jonas spoke with Andy Cohen on "Andy Cohen Live" about his new solo single, "Work It Out" (out July 19), from his forthcoming solo album.

"When you come out with a song as catchy as 'Work It Out' and your brothers hear it, are they like, 'What the f-? Why didn't you give this to us?'" Andy asked.

"Siblings can't share everything," Joe replied.

Joe has been a part of the Jonas Brothers sibling trio with Nick and Kevin Jonas since 2005 as well as the dance-rock band DNCE since 2015. Joe's only other solo project in his nearly 20-year music career was his 2011 album, "Fastlife," which contained the single "See No More."

Joe explained that his yet-to-be-released song "Only Love" started the solo project conversation with his brothers. When he first shared the song with Nick, Nick assumed it was intended for the Jonas Brothers.

"Nick was about to go do a movie with Paul Rudd. Kevin got another season of 'Claim to Fame,'" Joe said. "And then I was like, 'Look, I also want to do music on my own for a bit. No offense, but that song "Only Love" that you really like, that you've been listening to for the past two weeks thinking it's for [the Jonas Brothers], can I have that for me?'"

Joe added, "Nick took a long pause and he was like, 'Damn. But I get it. It's all good.'"

Even though Joe had had it in his mind all along that "Only Love" was his, he explained that he felt he still had to ask his brothers and get their blessing to record and release the song himself as a solo artist.

"This is the most personal music I think I've ever written in a body of work," Joe revealed. "I think a lot of times you get pitched songs, you have outside writers or producers that say, 'Hey, here's a cool idea.' And then you're like, 'Great. Let me make this make sense.' And also why I wanted it to be my voice and not three guys or DNCE is because I was like, 'It's weird when somebody else is speaking from your experience sometimes.'"

He continued, "You can make this like a generalization, saying, like, 'Alright, this is what we all go through. We've all gone through something like this in our life, whether good or bad or heartache.' And for me, I was like, 'This is something that I feel like it's hard for me to just share that with anyone.'"

Joe Jonas' full interview with Andy Cohen airs on "Andy Cohen Live" on Radio Andy (Ch. 102) on July 18 at 10am ET. Stream the full episode on the SiriusXM app after its premiere.
