As new school year starts, City urges safe driving

On Wednesday, Aug. 14, Mesquite police officers, firefighters, and members of the City Council helped welcome Mesquite ISD students back to school for the 2024-25 school year.

Mayor Daniel Alemán, Jr., and all the Councilmembers send best wishes to all students, parents, teachers, administrators and school staff for a wonderful school year.

"Education is the foundation of our community's future," Mayor Alemán said. "We have an incredibly supportive environment in our Mesquite schools. Because of that, I believe that with dedication and hard work, students can achieve great success this year. We are cheering you on and hope this is your best year yet."

For the first day of school, Mesquite Fire Department had fire engines parked near several schools and displayed "Please Slow Down, School Back In Session" banners. During the first week of classes, Mesquite Police Department personnel will be at many schools to support students and their families.

Now that school has started, the City is reminding everyone to pay attention in school zones and crosswalks. No texting while driving, no cell phone usage in crosswalks, watch for children when driving near schools, stop for school buses and please, "Drive Like Your Family Lives Here."
