BSMI and Consumers' Foundation Jointly Released Testing Results of Electric Two-sided Cooking Plates

Electric two-sided cooking plates, commonly known as sandwich toasters, have become a staple of in many households due to their convenience, versatility, and ability to provide quick, customizable, and cost-effective meals. The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) in collaboration with the Consumers' Foundation, randomly purchased 10 different brands and models of electric two-sided cooking plates from supermarkets, online shopping platforms and home appliance stores for testing in 2023. The results of the tests showed that all items related to "quality," "key component comparison" and "Commodity Inspection Mark" met the standards. However, 1 product did not meet the "Chinese labeling" criteria.

The BSMI urges consumers to purchase electric two-sided cooking plates that bear the Commodity Inspection Mark and to check the integrity of the Chinese labeling on the outer packaging, including information such as manufacturer's name, address, model, and specifications (e.g., voltage and power consumption). When using, consumers should carefully read the instructions, warnings, and precautions. Additionally, when using the products, ensure that the power cord plug and socket are tightly connected without any looseness or incomplete insertion. When unplugging the power cord from the socket, grasp the plug to remove it, rather than pulling on the cord, to avoid breaking the internal copper wires. When using the electric two-sided cooking plates, be cautious of the high surface temperature and wait for the heating unit to cool down before cleaning to avoid burns.

For the product that did not pass labeling checks, the BSMI will notify the company to take corrective actions within a specified time limit. A fine of not less than NTD 100,000 and not more than NTD 1,000,000 will be imposed and their registration will be rescinded if corrective actions are not completed within the deadline.

The BSMI indicated that electric two-sided cooking plates are subject to mandatory inspection and are not allowed to be released from production premises or imported before completion of the inspection procedures. The BSMI implements an annual market surveillance program to continuously monitor the safety of products on the market. In case non-compliant products are found, the BSMI looks into the causes, make interview reports and take actions in accordance with relevant regulations.
