Estonia is participating in the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank

Governor of Eesti Pank Madis Müller, Deputy Governor Ülo Kaasik, Advisor on International Relations to the Ministry of Finance Märten Ross, and Head of the State Treasury Department Janno Luurmees are attending the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank on 10-16 April in Washington.

The focus of the meetings is on the increased risks facing the global economy. The recovery in the global economy after the Covid-19 pandemic has been made much harder by Russia's war against Ukraine, which has caused energy and food prices to rise, and also caused global shortages of food and fertilisers that particularly impact low income countries and households.

As geopolitical fragmentation increases, there are areas that need greater international cooperation than before and that can only be addressed through global solutions. These include handling the consequences of the pandemic, and resolving the debt crises facing many emerging and developing economies, getting debt back on a sustainable track, and adapting to and mitigating climate change. Their large memberships give both the IMF and the World Bank a good platform for discussing forms of cooperation and offer members support through both consultation and financing.

The Estonian representatives will meet members of the managements of the IMF and the World Bank, colleagues from the US Treasury, and representatives of the private sector during the Spring Meetings. Together with colleagues from the other Baltic states, they will also meet representatives of Ukraine.

The Spring and Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank are held twice a year and bring together high-level delegations from all the countries that are members of the two organisations to discuss key economic and financial questions and coordinate global economic policy.

For the full schedule of the meetings, see the IMF website.
