October Environmental Horticulture Programs

​​The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Environmental Horticulture programs for October 2024. These programs are being offered by Environmental Horticulture Agent Cynthia Nazario-Leary and Master Gardener volunteers.

Effects of Freezing on Your North Florida Landscape - Oct.8, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Alachua County Ag Auditorium (22716 W. Newberry Road, Newberry)

October is a good time to start preparing North Florida gardens for winter. This program teaches how plants adapt to cold temperatures, factors influencing plant responses to freezing, strategies to reduce freezing effects, and overwintering techniques. Participants will discover cold-hardy plant options for winter color in North Florida.

There is no registration fee, but participants must register online​. It is limited to 100 participants.

Fall Horticultural Expo & Plant Sale - Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Alachua County Agriculture & Equestrian Center (23100 W. Newberry Road, Newberry)

The Alachua County Master Gardener Volunteer Program and Gainesville Garden Club are excited to announce this upcoming event that will offer a fun-filled, family-friendly day of learning, exploration, and community spirit. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting, there's something for everyone. Admission and parking are free.

Event highlights will include:

  • Doug Tallamy, keynote speaker, presenting "Grow Your Own Homegrown National Park" at 2 p.m.
  • Fall plant sale (featuring a wide variety of native plants and Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ ideas)
  • Nature displays (explore the wonders of local wildlife and ecosystems)
  • Florida Forest Service (meet Smokey the Bear and learn about forest conservation)
  • Kid's zone
  • Food trucks
