$75 Million Project Includes Class I Bicycle/Pedestrian Underpass

San Jose - Decreased commute times will welcome San Jose drivers as Caltrans and the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara officially complete a comprehensive project to alleviate congestion on one of the region's busiest interchanges.

The entities, in partnership with the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), cut the ribbon on the US 101/De La Cruz Boulevard/Trimble Road Interchange Improvements project at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 30. Completion of the $75 million project marks a significant milestone in enhancing transportation infrastructure and safety in the San Jose area.

The new interchange features a six-lane overcrossing and added a dedicated Class I underpass for pedestrians and bicyclists, which encourages active transportation and enhances safety by separating non-motorized traffic from vehicles. In addition to these improvements, the upgraded overcrossing meets current seismic standards, further ensuring the safety and resilience of the infrastructure.

Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, funded $25 million of project costs. SB 1 provides $5 billion in transportation funding annually split between the state and local agencies. Road projects progress through construction phases more quickly based on the availability of SB 1 funds, including projects that are partially funded by SB 1. "This project would not be possible without the support of the California voters who approved Senate Bill 1 (SB-1) at the ballot box," Caltrans District 4 Director Diana El-Tawansy said. "With $25 million of SB-1 funds allocated to this project, we have made a significant investment in the future of our transportation network."

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the new pedestrian underpass below De La Cruz Blvd. Community members, local officials, and transportation stakeholders joined Caltrans in celebrating the successful completion of this vital infrastructure upgrade.
