Costa Rica highlights CABEI as its main multilateral development partner

San José, August 9, 2024.- The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) is "Costa Rica's main multilateral partner", according to the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Policy (Mideplan) in its most recent survey on the behavior of international cooperation in the country.

The analysis, corresponding to the year 2023, highlights CABEI's position for the second consecutive year, since 45.17% of the multilateral cooperation managed and offered to the country, equivalent to more than US$2.22 billion, came from CABEI, both in reimbursable and non-reimbursable resources to be invested in infrastructure, energy, fiscal policy, institutional strengthening, among others.

"We are pleased to maintain our position as Costa Rica's main ally, with timely financial solutions that improve the quality of life of Costa Ricans, such as access to basic services like hospitals, potable water and sustainable electricity, as well as modern highways that reduce travel times and improve the country's competitiveness, among others, as required by the country," said CABEI Country Manager in Costa Rica, Álvaro Alfaro.

The recently approved reimbursable resources include US$700 million for the Emergency Program for the Comprehensive and Resilient Reconstruction of Infrastructure (PROERI), which includes more than 500 interventions in works at imminent risk in more than 78% of the national territory, US$450 million for the development of the Government City project, which is currently being analyzed by the Costa Rican authorities for its implementation and would benefit more than 70,000 citizens, and savings equivalent to US$17 million annually in office rents for the 35 institutions that the building complex would house, among others.

Also noteworthy were the non-reimbursable cooperation contributions of US$1 million for the project "Implementation of the Structuring Plan and Start-up of the Central American Ferry and Similar", and another for US$990,000 to finance the "Technical and Operational Optimization Studies for the San José-San Ramón National Route No. 1 Project", both with the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT), among others.

CABEI reaffirms its commitment as an engine of positive transformation in the region, promoting opportunities for all and improving the quality of life of its inhabitants. The institution will continue working to strengthen sustainable development, promote social inclusion and guarantee a prosperous future for all the inhabitants of its member countries.
