Airport Operations Remain Smooth as Various Measures Implemented in Response to Super Typhoon Yagi

(HONG KONG, 6 September 2024, 1230hrs) - Flight operations at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) during Super Typhoon Yagi have remained largely smooth. The activation of the Airport Emergency Centre has enabled different companies and organisations across the airport community, including government departments and airlines, to maintain close communication.

For the whole day of 5 September, HKIA handled 916 flights while 50 flights were cancelled. Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has activated the Flight Rescheduling Control System to coordinate the orderly recovery of flights today. By 12 noon today, 778 landing and departing slots have been assigned for the whole day, around 80% of that of a normal day.

The airport has implemented the Queue Ticket System for taxis after No.8 Signal was issued, facilitating passengers to obtain queue numbers via ticket machines or mobile app. Under this arrangement, passengers would not need to stand in the queue waiting for taxis. A temporary rest area has been set up in the terminal, providing 500 chairs, mobile charging stations and other facilities. The Passenger Care Team has also been deployed at the terminal, distributing supplies to passengers such as dry foodstuffs, bottled water and blankets. Restaurants and convenience stores at HKIA have extended their operating hours and stocked up extra food and beverages.

To ensure that the airport has sufficient staff to handle flights this morning, over 1,000 airport staff stayed at the airport last night, with over 500 staff spending the night at two rest centres provided by AAHK. Meanwhile, AAHK also provides a staff shuttle bus service between Tung Chung and the airport.

AAHK advises passengers to check with their airlines for the latest flight information, and proceed to the airport only when their seats and flight time have been confirmed. Passengers can check HKIA's website, or "My HKG" mobile app for latest flight information.
