On November 29, 2024 around 11:30 p.m., Fort Collins Police dispatch received a call from a citizen concerned about a possible road-rage incident and reported they were being followed by a dark colored Ford F-150 with Wyoming license plates. The caller was instructed to drive toward the Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS) building so officers could meet them in the parking lot. As the citizen was driving toward the police department, the truck rammed them from behind and continued following. FCPS officers quickly located the vehicles on Ziegler Road, near South Timberline Road, and initiated a traffic stop. The truck disregarded the stop and fled northbound on Timberline Road.
Soon after, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) located the truck driving northbound on Interstate 25. The driver eluded deputies and drove east on County Road 64 at speeds in excess of 100 mph, and at one point during the pursuit, rammed a deputy's patrol car. Upon approaching the intersection of County Road 102 and County Road 19, the vehicle went off the road into an agricultural field, crashed and became disabled. The driver, identified as Jimmy Whitver (dob 10/20/1972), was taken into custody by LCSO and transported to an area hospital for evaluation.
When Whitver was released from the hospital a short time later, FCPS took him into custody and booked him at Larimer County Jail for the following charges;
· Felony - Attempted Second Degree Assault (6 counts)
· Felony - Driving Under the Influence (1 count)
· Felony - Vehicular Eluding (1 count)
· Felony - Second Degree Criminal Trespass on Agriculture Land (1 count)
· Misdemeanor - Criminal Mischief (1 count)
· Misdemeanor - Harassment, Following in a Public Place (1 count)
Charges are merely an accusation by law enforcement and all suspects must be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
