Controller Cohen Announces Appointment

SACRAMENTO - Controller Malia M. Cohen announces the appointment of Riverside County Treasurer-Tax Collector Matthew Jennings to the California State Controller's Committee on County Tax Collecting Procedures.

Mr. Jennings has served as the Treasurer-Tax Collector for the County of Riverside since September of 2020. In his elected capacity, he is responsible for a department consisting of 110 employees and for the billing and collection of over $4 billion annually in property taxes. In addition, he oversees the approximate $13 billion Treasurer's Pooled Investment Fund.

"Mr. Jennings brings a tremendous amount of municipal finance expertise to this committee which will help enhance the state's levying and collection procedures," stated Controller Cohen. "As Treasurer-Tax Collector for Riverside County he also brings an economic perspective from a region whose economic base is growing and diversifying very quickly."

The Committee on County Tax Collecting Procedures was created by statute in 1967 and serves an advisory committee to the State Controller's Office for consultation on tax levying and collecting procedures and the committee instructs, advises, and directs tax collectors in their duties and responsibilities.

As the chief fiscal officer of California, Controller Cohen is responsible for accountability and disbursement of the state's financial resources. The Controller has independent auditing authority over government agencies that spend state funds. She is a member of numerous financing authorities, and fiscal and financial oversight entities including the Franchise Tax Board.
