Santa Monica commemorates Hispanic Heritage Month 2024

Hispanic Heritage Month, an annual celebration of the history, culture and contributions of Latino and Hispanic communities, kicked off on Sept. 15 and continues through Oct. 15.

On Tuesday, Sept. 10, the Santa Monica City Council hosted a proclamation for Hispanic Heritage Month and artist Israel Campos read a proclamation he'd composed titled "La vida es un carnaval" or "Life is a Carnival."

Santa Monica College celebrates Latinx/e Heritage Month 2024 with a series of engaging events Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 that honor the rich and diverse Latinx/e culture. The lineup includes insightful talks, performances, movie screenings, cultural celebrations, music and delicious food.

On Sept. 14 through Sept. 16, from sunset (approximately 7 p.m.) to 12:30 a.m., the Pacific Wheel on the Santa Monica Pier lights up to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and Mexican Independence Day. The colorful display highlights the rich diversity of Hispanic, Latino and Latinx communities.

The Santa Monica Public Library has a slate of events to commemorate the month and will have a curated display in the lobby of the Main Library. You can also check out their Hispanic Heritage Reads lists for kids, middle grade students,teens, and adults.

Tuesday Tales: A Traveling Storytime - Hispanic Heritage Month
Tuesday, Sept. 17, 10:30 a.m.     

A fun and engaging weekly series featuring stories, songs and rhymes for ages 2-5.    

Family Lotería Night
Thursday, Oct. 3, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by playing this popular, traditional Mexican board game. Enjoy light refreshments and prizes!

Bilingual Concert with Baila Baila
Saturday, Oct. 5, 11 - 11:45 a.m.

Families are invited to get up and dance while we sing in Spanish together at this interactive bilingual concert.

Also, while it is not a part of Hispanic Heritage Month offerings, since Día de los Muertos takes place in November, Library patrons can begin to contribute to the Library's Día de los Muertos Ofrenda during the month of October.
