School Counseling option added to Cameron’s Master of Education in Education degree program

Students enrolled in Cameron University's Master of Education in Education degree program can now select School Counseling as an option. This option is intended to provide a pathway for educators to receive training and eventual certification in PK-12 School Counseling.

The addition of the School Counselor concentration to Cameron's M.Ed. in Education will allow aspiring counselors to receive quality training within southwest Oklahoma, which will aid in retaining talent to this region and reduce the workforce gap. The program will offer current educators the opportunity to advance their qualifications and skills, fostering professional growth and improving service delivery in schools.

"Southwest Oklahoma is facing a significant shortage of certified school counselors, a gap that is impacting the quality of education and support services available to PK-12 students," says Dr. Stacie Garrett, chair, CU Department of Education. "By adding this option, we have taken a pro-active step in addressing this shortage. Additionally, the program aligns with our mission to provide comprehensive education and support services to our community."

The presence of qualified school counselors is essential for fostering a supportive learning environment, promoting students' academic, career, and social/emotional development and addressing the diverse needs of our student population.

The increasing prevalence of mental health issues among students necessitates professional

counseling services. Certified school counselors are trained to identify and address mental health concerns, provide crisis intervention, and support students in developing coping strategies. School counselors also play a pivotal role in helping students navigate academic challenges, set realistic goals, and prepare for post-secondary education and careers.

Cameron's Master of Education in Education degree program requires 33 hours for completion, comprised of 15 core hours applicable to all options as well as 18 hours specific to each of the five options (English, Literacy, School Counseling, Special Education, and Teaching and Learning.)
