Lowndes County Emergency Management Urges Residents to Use A Licensed Contractor

Lowndes County, Georgia- If your home or business needs repair following Hurricane Helene, please make sure that anyone working on your property is a licensed contractor. Licensed contractors should be able to provide a copy of their occupational tax certificate (business license), proof of insurance, and a contract that outlines the work to be done, cost, and a time by which the work will be completed. A reputable contractor should not ask for payment upfront. There is no indication that there is going to be any financial or FEMA assistance at this time.

All residential and general contractors in the State of Georgia are required to be licensed through the State Licensing Board. The Georgia Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates subcontractors, such as plumbers, electricians, and heat and air conditioning contractors.

:

  • Ask to see the contractor's license and then check with the Secretary of State to make sure it is valid.
  • Ask to see proof of insurance (personal liability, workers' compensation, and property damage).
  • Consider setting payment terms in conjunction with completed stages of the job.
  • Do not pay for any work that is incomplete.

Lowndes County residents should call 229-671-2790 to report solicitation of unlicensed contractors.
