City of Cedar Rapids Closing Cedar River Boat Ramps Due to Rising Waters -

The City of Cedar Rapids is closing access points and boat ramps to the Cedar River effective at 8:00p.m. Thursday, June 27 and will tentatively re-open them at 8:00a.m. on Sunday, June 30. This includes boat ramps at Mohawk Park, Ellis Boat Ramp, Valor Way, and Prairie Park as well as all walk-in points. Rising waters on the Cedar River make recreational use of the river dangerous for boaters, canoe/kayakers, and tubers. It also creates an unnecessary safety risk for emergency crews called for rescue operations.

This is a standard practice for the City anytime the Cedar River reaches 13 feet on the gauge at Cedar Rapids. Cedar Rapids Fire Chief Greg Smith says this decision is a necessary step to ensure safety for all. "We're communicating this closure as part of our effort to keep boaters and recreational users of the river out of the fast current and away from potentially submerged debris. The Fire Department is prepared to assist in nearly any emergency, but this is a critical mitigation step for the City to take when the river's rising like this." The river is currently forecast to crest at 14.5 feet around 11:00a.m. on Saturday and drop below 13 feet early Sunday morning.
