Story of NF: Jana W.

Jana was seven when she found out about NF. It was very fearful. But she was courageous, and we trusted the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh to save her life. The tumors were growing rapidly. Not knowing what to expect, she did lengthy chemo treatments, and they were very successful.

She has faced many, many obstacles with courage and grace. Her NF caused several different complications in her life. She had speech challenges and had to use a prosthesis made for her soft palate. She had seizures, she has optic gliomas in both eyes and several other tumors in her brain. She had to endure injections monthly for precocious puberty and learning disabilities. Her face is slightly different from the NF. She has tumors on her body, large ones causing discomfort. Also, being different from others was a huge challenge. But, she again showed her power of positivity, and many people were touched by her spirit and loving soul. She was granted a wish through Special Wish. She was nominated Hero of the Day on CBS News for her courage and kindness. She is a truly wonderful person.

Jana finished school. She went to a local college for the disabled. She was blessed to meet a young man who looked beyond her difficulties and differences. After a long journey they married. Jana is now dealing with Glaucoma, and she lost her vision in her right eye. She deals with headaches and tumor changes, but she takes all of these changes in stride. Her faith and her attitude are very positive, and she has grown into an extremely grateful and blessed woman.

Attending NF Camp was an exciting experience and a defining moment for her. She is a housewife who is involved in her religious beliefs and serves her calling to share them.
