Update: NOFD on the Scene of a Four-Alarm in the 1800 Block of Hastings Place

New Orleans, LA- The New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) is on the scene of a four-alarm working fire in the 1800 block of Hastings Place (at the fork with Magazine St.). Currently there are twenty-five NOFD Fire Operations (Fire-Ops) vehicles being supported by seventy-two Fire-Ops personnel. Presently the fire involves four two-story, wood-framed dwellings. All residents had either escaped safely or were not home when NOFD personnel arrived at 1:57 p.m. This is still a very active incident, and residents and commuters are asked to avoid the area. Considering the scope of this incident, we anticipate NOFD resources and personnel to remain on the scene for several hours after this fire has been placed under control. More information will be forthcoming once this fire has been placed under control.

Update: This incident was listed as under control at 5:07 p.m. The fire is believed to have begun in the rear of the two-story dwelling at 1808 Hastings Pl. and extended to the two-story, multi-unit dwelling at 1810 Hastings Pl. Another two-story, wood-framed dwelling at 1816 Hastings Place received moderate to extensive damage to its left and rear exterior walls and roof. A two-story, unoccupied, masonry constructed building to the immediate left of what is believed to be the original fire building, received moderate damage to its right exterior wall but firefighters were able to keep the fire from extending to the building's interior. At last count, seven residents are believed to have been displaced by this incident. The American Red Cross was requested to the scene to assist those displaced.

A finger laceration was the only other firefighter injury reported. The New Orleans Police Department, Entergy Gas and Electric and New Orleans Emergency Medical Services assisted with the mitigation of this incident. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The NOFD will maintain a Fire Watch of NOFD apparatuses and personnel at this location to conduct overhaul and salvage operations.
