AAMC Endorses Foreign Medical School Accountability Fairness Act

The AAMC endorsed the Foreign Medical School Accountability Fairness Act (S. 4744), reintroduced by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) on July 23. The bill has been supported by the AAMC in previous Congresses [refer to Washington Highlights, Sept. 9, 2022].

The legislation seeks to eliminate the exemption that certain foreign medical schools receive from current Department of Education Title IV requirements. Specifically, it would apply the 60% enrollment of non-U.S. citizens and 75% U.S. Medical Licensing Exam pass rate standards to all medical schools outside of the United States and Canada. Additionally, it would support increased accountability and help ensure that students attending international medical schools meet consistent rigorous standards.
