Public Works' Week in Review for August 8, 2024

The Public Works Department is made up of various sub-departments including Fleet, Line Repair, Streets/Stormwater and Traffic, Wastewater, and Water. Each week, over 100 employees are responsible for the maintenance, monitoring, and improvement of existing and new infrastructure across League City which includes everything from roadways and traffic lights to storm drains, sewers, and water production.

Below are some tips and projects they are working on:

24-inch Sanitary Sewer Force Main Repair

Due to a major break in a critical sewer force main, Public Works needed to shut down both east bound lanes to complete emergency repairs. This 24" ductile iron pipe serves as the primary wastewater conveyance for the east side of League City along FM 2094 and has been slated for replacement due to service age. Over time H2s gasses can degrade the pipe and create weaknesses in the pipe wall which may impact the integrity and performance. Repair crews had to remove over 1400 sq ft of concrete from the east bound lanes of FM 2094 and dig down 10ft to expose the over 40-year-old ductile iron force main. It was determined that the top of the main line had been compromised and 18ft of pipe required replacement. The new section of pipe 24" pipe was installed, and concrete repairs were coordinated to limit impacts to traffic. The Capital Improvement Project that replaces this aging force main has been designed and is now under bid for construction, with completion anticipated Fall of 2025.

Maintenance Activity on Grit Cyclone at Southwest Water Reclamation Facility

The Wastewater Department recently drained, cleaned, and inspected the grit cyclone at the Southwest Water Reclamation Facility. This activity is performed quarterly to make sure the components that remove grit are in good condition and is operating efficiently. Regular inspections and cleaning by operations allow proper performance of equipment in the wastewater treatment process.

Hydraulic Hose Repair on Grapple Truck

The City of League City's grapple truck is a high-use vehicle currently used to support cleanup from Hurricane Beryl. Being used for multiple hours and multiple days this unit has experienced a hydraulic leak. The Fleet department had a hydraulic hose made. A new hose replaced the failed hose allowing the unit to be restored to operations.
