The War in Ukraine: Is an Endgame in Sight

Seton Hall University will host a forum titled "The War in Ukraine: Is an Endgame in Sight?" from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, October 10, 2024, in Fahy Hall, Room 236. Over the past summer, the war in Ukraine has entered a more dynamic stage. Russian military pressure has intensified, leading to substantial gains, while Ukraine's surprise incursion into the Kursk region has exposed Russian vulnerabilities and revived hopes for victory. Meanwhile the prospects for a negotiated settlement seem as remote as ever. Is the conflict moving toward an endgame, or can we expect the war to continue indefinitely?

Professors Nathaniel Knight, Ph.D., professor of History and Director of Russian and East European Studies Program and Maxim Matusevich, Ph.D., professor of History and Department Chair will be joined by Columbia University political scientist Elise Giuliano, Ph.D., to discuss the current state of the war in Ukraine and the prospects for a resolution.

Elise Giuliano is a senior lecturer in Political Science, Director of the MARS-REERS Program, and Director of the Program on U.S.-Russia Relations at the Harriman Institute of Columbia University. Her research focuses on the politics of ethnic identity, especially the question of how ethnicity impacts popular attitudes and political mobilization. Her book, Constructing Grievance: Ethnic Nationalism in Russia's Republics (Cornell University Press), examined minority support for nationalist separatism in Russia's ethnic republics. Currently, Giuliano is researching how the crisis in Ukraine has influenced political opinion among Ukrainian citizens-especially in the understudied eastern regions of the country.

This event is co-sponsored by the Russian and East European Studies Program, Department of History, and the Slavic Club. It is free and open to the public. Slavic refreshments will be served.
