Suspicious death ruled homicide - Arrest made

Suspicious death near 27000 block of Eucalyptus Court ruled a homicide; arrest made

HAYWARD, Calif., The suspicious death that occurred on September 23, 2024,near the 27000 block of Eucalyptus Court has been ruled a homicide.

On September 28, 2024, detectives arrested Alvaro Sierra, a 47-year-old Hayward resident, as the man believed to be responsibleforthe death of 47-year-old Hayward resident, Tania Afanador.

On September 23,2024,at approximately 10:36p.m., officers responded to the report of a disturbance near the 27000 block of Eucalyptus Court. The reporting party called 9-1-1 after afamily member at the residence indicated that something had happened inside the home.

Officers arrived on scene and located Afanador, unresponsive. Afanadorwas pronounced deceased at the scene.

Alvaro Sierra was also locatedat the scene and appeared to have suffered from self-inflicted lacerations. Sierra was transported to a local hospital for treatment, was discharged onSeptember 29, 2024, and was booked at the Santa Rita County Jail for murder.

Afanador and Sierra werelegally married, lived together, and did not have any children in common.

Chief Bryan Matthews commented, stating:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Tania during this incredibly difficult time. The dedication of our entire department, from the detectives to supporting teams, was essential in solving this case.Their diligent efforts in gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and working together led to the swift and safe apprehension of the suspect. Domestic violence is a tragic and often unreported crime. We strongly encourage anyone in an abusive situation to reach out for help. We are here to provide protection and connect individuals with the resources and support they need."
