Small Steps, Big Impact: Path to Our Net Zero Goal

  • Lam Research published our latest Environmental, Social, and Governance report
  • The report focuses on energy savings across our operations, products, and supply chain

This story is part of our 2023 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report.

In the last year, Lam Research has made progress to transition our operations-and beyond-to use less energy and cleaner sources of power.

Driving the news: Today, we published our latest ESG report, a deep look at the work done at Lam to live our guiding principle to Act With Purpose for a Better World.

Why it matters: Three years ago, we made the most ambitious goal in Lam history: to help mitigate climate change by aiming to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. As we march toward a more sustainable tomorrow, every effort-big or small-drives us closer to our goal.

Zoom out: With an operational footprint spanning 124 offices across three continents, even a small adjustment in our processes and equipment can add up to big energy savings over time.

  • In 2023, we focused on identifying and implementing energy-savings across our sites. During the year, our facilities in Tualatin, Oregon and Fremont and Livermore, California enrolled in utility-led strategic energy management programs. These programs paired our onsite teams with coaches to implement low- or no-cost measures to reduce energy consumption. The projects collectively led to more than 2 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy savings-enough to power nearly 2,225 U.S. homes for a month. These efforts place us ahead of our energy savings target in 2023, keeping us on track to achieve our goal of reaching 12 million kWh of total energy savings by 2025.
  • We're committed to achieving 100% renewable electricity across Lam's sites by the end of the decade and our teams are making strides toward this goal. Our Villach, Austria site, which uses 100% renewable electricity, now generates approximately two megawatt-hours (mWh) per day and our Penang, Malaysia facility produces 13 mWh per day-enough to power an electric car for two trips around the equator, collectively.
  • One of our initial solutions to reduce energy consumption in our products is ECO Mode, a feature designed to activate a tool's abatement controls or idle its peripheral components when not in use. In 2023, we enhanced ECO Mode by improving communication between our process tools and peripheral components. We also expanded the availability of ECO Mode to new product lines and customers' existing tools in the field. The use of ECO Mode has the potential to reduce peripheral energy use by 40% in an idle state.
  • We work closely with our suppliers, whose activities represent most of our greenhouse gas footprint, to promote a lower-carbon supply chain. In 2023, we initiated energy assessments with Lam's top suppliers in Korea and Japan. Through five assessments we identified more than 40 energy-efficiency opportunities, including upgrading to energy-saving lighting or compressor pumps.
