Update on search for the 22nd University of California president

University of California Board of Regents Chair Janet Reilly today named the regental members of a special committee to lead the search for the 22nd UC president. The special committee will consider candidates, consult with the broad UC community, and recommend a candidate to the full board.

Regents serving on the special committee are:

  • Regent Carmen Chu (Committee Chair)
  • Regent Gareth Elliott (Committee Vice Chair)
  • Regent Maria Anguiano
  • Regent Ana Matosantos
  • Regent John A. Pérez
  • Regent Mark Robinson

In accordance with Regents Policy 7101, the special committee will also include Student Regent Josiah Beharry, a UC Merced graduate student, and Alumni Regent Alfonso Salazar, who also serves as President of the Alumni Associations of UC. California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Chair Reilly will serve as ex officio members of the committee.

The chair of the special committee will also invite the Academic Council to appoint an Academic Advisory Committee that will include the Chair of the Academic Council and at least one representative of each of the 10 UC campuses to assist in screening candidates. Advisory committees representing students, staff, and alumni will also be formed to facilitate broad consultation with the university community. The special committee will also seek the input of chancellors, affiliated national laboratory directors, and vice presidents. In addition, an executive search firm will be selected to help identify candidates and facilitate a global search for the next president of the University of California. The search firm and schedule for public forums will be announced in the coming months.

"Appointing the next president of the University of California is one of the most critical responsibilities of the Board of Regents," said Chair Reilly. "We look forward to collaborating with the UC community in a thorough and inclusive search to identify the best possible leader for our world-class university."

Additional information on the search will be shared as it becomes available.
