U.S. Department of State Announces 2024 Fulbright-National Geographic Award Recipients

As part of the U.S. government's commitment to conservation of both the natural environment and cultural heritage around the world, and in partnership with the National Geographic Society, today the U.S. Department of State announced five Fulbright-National Geographic Award recipients for 2024. These Fulbrighters, who are also recognized by the National Geographic Society as National Geographic Explorers, will conduct research in Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Iceland, Papua New Guinea, and Sri Lanka to support the conservation of our planet's land and oceans to build a more sustainable future, and engage local communities to foster cross-cultural dialogue.

Now in its 11th year, the Fulbright-National Geographic Award provides additional funding and resources, through a partnership with the National Geographic Society, to enhance the reach and impact of select Fulbright U.S. Study/Research Awards that focus on conservation, technology, education, and storytelling in their respective host countries. In addition to their award funding, recipients will join a diverse global community of Fulbrighters and National Geographic Explorers and continue their professional development through a range of trainings, events, and public engagement opportunities offered by the National Geographic Society. Chosen through a merit-based and highly competitive process, recipients will utilize a variety of research methods and storytelling tools to carry out their projects, with support and mentorship from the National Geographic Society.

The Fulbright Program, founded in 1946, is the U.S. Department of State's flagship international educational exchange program. The Fulbright-National Geographic Award launched in 2013 as a partnership between the U.S. Department of State and the National Geographic Society.
