As Temperatures Drop, DGS Steps Up Fall-Winter Readiness Activities

DGS is ensuring District Government facilities, parks, greenspaces, community gardens, playgrounds, and more are ready for colder weather

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Today, the DC Department of General Services (DGS) announced the kickoff of its annual Fall-Winter Readiness Operations. Over the next several weeks, DGS's staff will be preparing for the colder seasons by winterizing water fountains and other outdoor water sources and green spaces, adjusting lighting sources, and preparing for snowy weather at DGS-maintained properties. Additionally, beginning October 15, DGS will be working with nearly 300 District Government facilities, including those affiliated with DC Public Schools (DCPS), to transfer HVAC systems from air conditioning to heating.

"Winter is coming, but so is DGS's dedicated team of professionals. From grounds keepers to pipe and steam fitters, DGS puts in the work every single day to ensure our facilities are ready for whatever the weather may bring," said DGS Director Delano Hunter. "And while this work is kicking into high gear this week, we have been laying the groundwork since May to prepare our boilers to switch from air conditioning to heating, ensuring District residents have access to warm, comfortable spaces."

All DC government properties are undergoing the transition from cooling season to heating season. This annual switchover phase begins October 15 and lasts approximately 30-45 days. DGS will attempt to change properties to reflect the outside temperatures towards the start of the switchover process, based on the DC Department of Buildings (DOB) passed boiler inspections.

In recent years, warmer temperatures have extended into the beginning of autumn due to climate change. DGS monitors these changes every year and adjusts its switchover operations accordingly.
