On May 2, 2024, the New York State Police were requested to responded to a pro-Palestine protest/encampment at SUNY New Paltz. At approximately 12:13 a.m. on May 3, 2024, while members of the State Police began to disperse the crowd, a protestor threw a metal Gatorade bottle which struck the face of a New York State Police Investigator which resulted in the investigator sustaining a laceration above his left eye. The investigator was treated at a local area hospital where he received several stitches and was released. On May 7, 2024, after a thorough investigation, the New York State Police arrested Aiden P. O'Brien, age 20, of New City, New York for Assault 2nd, Reckless Endangerment 2nd, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th, Disorderly Conduct and Trespass. Obrien was arraigned in the Town of Plattekill Court and remanded to the Ulster County Jail with cash bail set at $5,000. O'Brien is scheduled to re-appear at the New Paltz Court on May 8, 2024.
