Service-Learning project opportunity for cancer patients/survivors

Cheryl Jorcyk, a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, is seeking cancer patients or survivors from the campus community (and beyond) to partner with senior biology students studying the molecular biology of cancer. As part of the service-learning component of the class, students will conduct background research for participants, starting early in the spring semester. Jorcyk is looking for four or five participants interested in this opportunity.

This project may benefit individuals seeking more information about their cancer or who are willing to share their story with a student aspiring to pursue cancer research or a career in medicine. Both participants and students will benefit from the relationship. Jorcyk will ensure all participants understand what kind of information students can provide, and she will personally review all materials for accuracy.

Those interested in participating or who have questions can contact Cheryl Jorcyk by Nov. 30 at [email protected] or (208) 426-4267

How will the project work?

Students will meet with their "client" three to four times over the semester at a public location.

  1. At the first meeting, the student will listen to what their client knows about cancer and offer personalized explanations of the basics of the biology of the type of cancer in question.
  2. At the second meeting, the student will provide explanations supported by copies of articles or websites. Often the student will draw pictures or offer analogies to help the client understand the technical aspects of chemo or radiation, or the progress of cancer through stages.
  3. At the third (and fourth) meeting, the student will provide additional resources that highlight prevention, future research, best sources for more information, and a list of local organizations that offer more specialized assistance.
