Brown Announces New Investments For Street Safety Across Northwest Ohio

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) awarded a Safer Streets for All grant to five Northwest Ohio communities. The program funds regional and local initiatives through grants to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries.

The investment was made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law - legislation that Brown helped write and pass - and will support the development of safety action plans and safety improvements.

"With this latest investment from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we are making our roads safer," said Brown. "This investment will allow Northwest Ohio communities to improve local streets to help to prevent serious accidents and keep Ohioans safe on the road."

The five grants total more than $24,480,000. Toledo, Bowling Green, Fremont, Ottawa County, and Lucas County are receiving the investment to deploy systemic safety improvements along 5 corridors, targeting the high-injury network and high-risk network across Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky, and Wood counties. Safety updates will include sidewalk widening, developing multi-use paths, roundabouts, refuge islands, high visibility crosswalks, and intersection lighting. The project also supports safer transfers between public transit and active transportation.

The project also includes supplemental activities, including a public information campaign and a pilot education effort on traffic safety, and a study on the effectiveness of rural roundabouts to calm traffic and reduce crashes.
