St Peter’s Garden is ready for the Christmas fun now the works are fully complete

We have now finished all the regeneration works within and surrounding St Peter's Garden, completing a piece of the Huddersfield Blueprint - a vision for the next decade of investment and beyond. The project was delivered in partnership with the Parish Church, a registered charity.

Works including new natural stone paving, widening and resurfacing of footpaths, cycle parking, tree planting, relocation of historic tombs have now been completed at the church grounds.

One of the main features of the project which is already providing lots of enjoyment and opportunities for local people and businesses is the new events space, located in the heart of the gardens to create a welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy day and night.

Prior to works being completely wrapped up around St Peter's, Barry Sheerman, who was Huddersfield MP for 45 years officially opened the space a few weeks ago. The opening was marked with a special Huddersfield Service in the church and a festival-style show headlined by popular Huddersfield rock band Storm.

The newly refurbished St.Peter's Garden will host around 40 stalls at the Huddersfield Christmas between 11am - 4pm on Saturday 30 November, featuring local artisan makers, festive food and refreshments. A live music stage will add to the festive atmosphere with choirs and bands from across the district.

If anyone has any events they're looking to host throughout the festive season, the church is encouraging local organisations to contact them with any requests or suggestions. Members of the public can contact the church by calling 01484 427964 or emailing [email protected]

Since the opening event, we have also completed the full works surrounding the church on Byram Street to improve drainage, and vehicle and pedestrian access this month. This will greatly complement the new events space in time for some festive fun.

Cllr Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration said:

"I'm thrilled after months of hard work and partnership working, we have completed part of Huddersfield Blueprint by delivering improvement works too and surrounding St Peter's Garden.

"Working alongside Huddersfield Parish Church, the events space was opened several weeks ago with a well-received show. I look forward to seeing many more to come, especially over the Christmas period. I'm sure the church will have lots to offer.

"Now we have completed works to Byram Street to improve public access, I really believe more people will want to visit Huddersfield Town Centre and more businesses will want to utilise this fantastic space, putting us on the right track to support the long-term sustainability of Huddersfield."

Event director the Rev Amanda Ogilvie from Huddersfield Parish Church said:

"This brand-new outdoor venue has everything needed to stage some brilliant events, including plenty of power sockets for lights and music amps.

"We want people to use it so simply contact the church for more information."

This project has been funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and Kirklees Council's Golden Routes Capital Programme.
