Polis Administration Announces $1.3 Million More for Successful E-Bike Rebate Program

Additional funding will provide at least 1,300 point-of-sale rebates to make e-bikes more affordable

Statewide - Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024 - The Polis administration's Colorado Energy Office (CEO) announced an additional round of rebates for the successful electric bicycle (e-bike) rebate program. Applications for the program will open Monday, September 16 at 10:00 AM MT and close Monday, September 23 at 4:00 PM MT. In addition to e-bike rebates, the state E-Bike Tax Credit discount will be available for all Coloradans purchasing a qualified e-bike at an authorized retailer through 2032.

"These popular rebates help save Coloradans money and break down barriers so more people can access e-bikes, improving Colorado's air quality and saving people time and money in traffic. Thousands of Coloradans have already taken advantage of these savings, and I look forward to seeing even more do the same," said Governor Jared Polis.

To date, Coloradans have redeemed more than 6,700 of these rebates. Of those that redeemed a rebate to date, 18% live in rural communities (compared to 14% of the state's total population), 35% are 55 years or older, and 88% qualify as low-income. The additional $1.348 million in funding will provide 1,300 to 1,500 more rebates to Coloradans.

"We are thrilled to add another round of funding for our nation-leading e-bike initiative," said CEO Executive Director Will Toor. "This program has been a win-win for consumers and businesses. E-bikes are not just a fun, easy, and active way to commute to work, pick up your groceries, or get from point A to point B; e-bike adoption is a key part of meeting the Polis administration's landmark goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and traffic congestion."

Similar to previous funding rounds, Colorado residents with an income at or below 80% of the area median income (AMI) in their county of residence can receive a $1,100 rebate. A $500 rebate is available to Colorado residents making 80%-100% of their county's AMI. Qualified recipients may receive an extra $300 to purchase an e-cargo bike, and certain qualified Coloradans can receive an additional $250 incentive to purchase an adaptive e-bike.

To redeem the rebate, recipients must purchase their e-bike in-person or over the phone from one of more than 170 authorized e-bike retailers across the state.

Coloradans can combine this rebate with the state e-bike tax credit, as long as the e-bike meets the eligibility criteria for the tax credit and the customer purchases the e-bike at a retailer participating in both programs.

A link that says "Apply Today" will be available on the E-Bike Rebate Program webpage when applications open on September 16. To apply, applicants will only need to submit their name, email, address, and rebate type (low- or moderate-income level; standard, e-cargo or adaptive). Once the application period closes on September 23, CEO will randomly select applicants to receive rebates, and then notify selected applicants via email. To confirm eligibility, selected applicants will have 48 hours to upload required documentation demonstrating Colorado residency and income-qualification. Participants who live in counties with existing e-bike rebate programs, such as Denver and Boulder, may apply for the statewide rebate. However, to ensure that as many Coloradans as possible across the state can access incentives to make e-bikes more affordable, rebate recipients may not combine the state rebate with other local incentives.
