The Boston Police Department Remembers the Service and Sacrifice of Patrolman John Lynch Who Died in the Line of Duty 80 years Ago Today

BPD Remembers: The men and women of the Boston Police Department remember the service and sacrifice of Officer John Lynch who passed away 80 years ago today. Officer Lynch passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 1944, as a result of injuries previously sustained in the line of duty. Officer Lynch was involved in a physical altercation with a suspect in 1936 which resulted in serious injuries. While Officer Lynch was able to return to work, his ongoing health issues persisted, ultimately, forcing him to retire from active duty in 1942 after serving the City of Boston for 22 years.

Officer Lynch was 57-years-old at the time of his passing and was survived by his wife and their four children.

Officer Lynch was laid to rest at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford. His name is located at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. His name is also forever engraved on the Hero Wall at Boston Police Headquarters and the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial at the State House in Boston.

In Boston, a Hero Sign has been placed in his honor in the area of Washington Street in Jamaica Plain. The sign is to forever honor the memory of a man who gave his life in service to his city. If you ever find yourself in the area and you happen to see his Hero Sign, kindly take a moment to honor and acknowledge the service and sacrifice of a brave man who died protecting and serving his city.
