Effigy Mounds Fall Ranger Guided Hikes

The public is invited to join a ranger on a series of guided hikes this fall at Effigy Mounds National Monument. All hikes will depart from the visitor center and return to the center. Visitors who complete these hikes will earn the park's new hiking reward challenge for the hike that they complete.

Hanging Rock Hike

On November 2nd at 12:30pm, visitors can join a ranger for a daylight savings day hike out to Hanging Rock. This strenuous seven-mile round-trip hike climbs over 400 feet in elevation and will conclude at the iconic Hanging Rock Overlook. Visitors should dress for the weather, pack snacks, and water. This hike should take approximately 3-3.5hrs to complete.

Super Moon Hike to Fire Point

November 15th at 4 pm. Two-mile round-trip hike to Firepoint overlook to watch the Supermoon rise over the bluffs and Mississippi River. This hike climbs 350 feet in elevation and takes place on a wood-chipped trail. Visitors should dress for the weather, bring water and a light. This hike should take approximately 1-1.5hrs to complete.

Heritage Addition Hike

November 30th at 1pm. This four-mile round-trip hike into the Heritage Unit follows a mostly level path into a less visited area of the park. Visitors should dress for the weather, bring a snack, and water. The hike should take approximately 2.5-3hrs to complete.

Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds, including some in the shape of animals. The monument is located three miles north of Marquette, Iowa, and 22 miles south of Waukon, Iowa, on HWY 76 and is one of 430+ national park sites.
