Receiving an annual flu vaccine is the best way to reduce flu-related illnesses and the risk of serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization or even death. Cheryl Wavrin, FCPH Immunization Coordinator, says, "We're encouraging everyone to get vaccinated against influenza, especially those who are 65 years and older, children younger than 5 years, pregnant people and those with chronic medical conditions like asthma and diabetes."

Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, the spread of flu illness, doctor visits and missed work and school due to flu. Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The first and most important step in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, anyone can get the flu but certain individuals are at higher risk of developing serious flu-related complications if they get sick. CDC estimates that flu has resulted in 9.3 million - 41 million illnesses, 100,000 - 710,000 hospitalizations and 4,900 - 51,000 deaths annually in the United States between 2010 and 2023.
