Flip Panel Discusses the Challenges of Adapting 'Pssica', Written by Pará Native Edyr Augusto, Which is Being Made Into a Miniseries for Netflix

São Paulo, October 10, 2024 - On the first day of the 22nd edition of the Paraty International Literary Festival - Flip, the Casa de Histórias, Netflix's partnership with piauí magazine and Janela + Mapa Lab, brought together fans and enthusiasts of literature and audiovisuals for a conversation about the long-awaited miniseries Pssica, which finished filming last week. The discussion, entitled "PSSICA - The Challenges of Adaptation," brought together author and Pará native Edyr Augusto, the Vice President of Content at Netflix Brazil, Elisabetta Zenatti, and producer and founding partner of O2 Filmes, Andrea Barata Ribeiro, to talk about the process of adapting the story from the page to the screen. The session was moderated by journalist João Batista Jr. of piauí magazine.

During the conversation, Edyr Augusto highlighted how, despite being firmly rooted in the culture and backdrop of the Amazon, Pssicamanages to deal with universal themes. Edyr expressed his joy at seeing the story reaching more and more people. "It's very difficult for a writer from Belém to break out of the bubble, but Pssica did it, and now we're going to take this story even further. It deals with universal themes, but it's fully connected to the cultures and landscapes of the Amazon - places rich in stories, music, and art that the whole of Brazil could truly benefit from knowing. I couldn't be more grateful for this opportunity."

Andrea Barata Ribeiro, in charge of Pssica's production, highlighted the long-standing partnership with Netflix and how the work came into her life in a remarkable way. "I was captured by the power of the story, the Amazonian scenery and the characters. They involved me in a truly unique way. From that moment on, I knew that this was a story that deserved to be told in other formats," Andrea revealed.

Elisabetta Zenatti highlighted the importance of telling stories with a global reach. "The miniseries touches on powerful themes, such as human trafficking, environmental destruction, and the rights of Indigenous people - but these themes are embedded so well into the show that they spark a natural reflection in those who watch it, managing to address issues that are hugely relevant to today's world," said Netflix Brazil's Vice President of Content.

Host João Batista Jr. described the journey of Pssicato the screen as a fascinating narrative in itself: "An author from Belém decides to send a letter to a publisher in São Paulo, and gets his book published. Then a production company reads a review about it in a newspaper, acquires the rights, and now we're about to see this story come to life as a Netflix miniseries, reaching audiences all over the world," he explained.

Directed by Quico Meirelles and Fernando Meirelles, with a script by Braulio Mantovani and produced by Andrea Barata Ribeiro of O2 Filmes, Pssica is based on the novel by Edyr Augusto and follows Janalice (Domithila Catete), Preá (Lucas Galvino) and Mariangel (Marleyda Soto) - three characters whose lives tragically collide on the banks of the Atlantic Amazon Forest. Caught up in a web of human trafficking, revenge, and a curse they believe has been placed on them, the trio struggle to survive the dangers that threaten them.

The miniseries, with a cast made up mostly of new talent, offers an intense and immersive experience set in the northern region of Brazil. The four episodes are scheduled to premiere globally in 2025, exclusively on Netflix.

Casa de Histórias is a space for conversations and connections and a gathering place for people who are passionate about powerful storytelling in its countless formats.
