HONOLULU - The City and County of Honolulu's Division of Road Maintenance (DRM) will utilize heavy equipment to remove the sand plug at the mouth of Ulehawa Stream at Ulehawa Beach Park in Nānākuli, beginning Monday, June 24, 2024. Work will be performed from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is expected to be completed by Tuesday, June 25, 2024, pending weather conditions.

During the project, the public is asked to avoid the work area on the beach due to the heavy equipment being used. City crews will remove as much large debris and floating litter as possible, and signs will be posted to warn beachgoers of the discharge of stream water into the ocean. Swimming in the ocean immediately outside of the sand plug removal location should be avoided due to potentially strong currents resulting from the opened stream mouth. The City appreciates the community's patience, as noise levels in the area will be increased throughout the duration of the project.

This plug clearing is authorized under the Department of the Army Permit POH-2020-00134, issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Division of Road Maintenance is part of the City's Department of Facility Maintenance. For questions or concerns in regards to this maintenance, please contact Mr. Thomas Takeuchi of DRM at (808) 768-3608.
