Rep. Cuellar Announces $784,194 in Federal Grant Funding for 100 Black Men of San Antonio, Inc.

Today, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) announced $784,194 in federal grant funding for 100 Black Men of San Antonio, Inc. to create a job skills reentry program for at-risk youth.

The Second Chance Act Youth Reentry Program Grant, administered by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) of the Department of Justice (DOJ), will be used for - Project Student Access Opportunity and Readiness (SOAR) - a youth transition partnership between 100 Black Men of San Antonio, Inc. and Bexar County Juvenile Probation. Participants will have access to a variety of programs - including job skills training, judicial oversight, specialized case management, and family liaison assistance - to ease their transition back to the community.

"I am pleased to have secured these federal dollars for 100 Black Men of San Antonio to increase workforce development programming for Bexar County youth. Early access to economic and educational opportunities reduces crime and recidivism, and this partnership will train our next generation of hard-working Texans" said Dr. Cuellar. "In Congress, I will continue to fight for federal dollars that invest in youth workforce development and public safety. I want to thank State Representative Barbara Gervin-Hawkins, 100 Black Men Executive Director Dr. Milton Harris and Program Director Ellis Vernadette for working with me to secure these funds."

"What they see is what they'll be," said Dr. Milton Harris, Executive Director of 100 Black Men.

In the FY24 government funding bill, Dr. Cuellar helped secure $375,000,000 for Juvenile Justice Programs within the Office of Justice Programs. Those funds are what created this groundbreaking partnership.

Dr. Cuellar has long fought to increase access to workforce development and education programs in South Texas. In the FY24 government funding bill, he championed provisions that provide more funding for early childhood education, increase access to registered apprenticeship programs, and support childcare access for working families.
