WVU simulation center to host open house in recognition of 15th anniversary

WHAT: The West Virginia University David and Jo Ann Shaw Center for Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety, also known as STEPS, will host an open house during Healthcare Simulation Week to celebrate its 15-year anniversary.

WHO:STEPS team members, including STEPS Director Dan Summersand Medical Director Dr. Dorian Williams, will be on hand to offer tours and provide information about learning opportunities.

NOTES:STEPS is a premier simulation program with fully responsive technology that provides learners from all five Health Sciences schools - Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacyand Public Health- with a safe setting to improve their skills before encountering patients in everyday and critical care situations.

The unique makeup of the Health Sciences Campus in Morgantown and the vastness of STEPS program offerings provide WVU students and care providers with one of the most comprehensive simulation learning environments in the country. The center also employs two Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator-Advanced® team members, a distinction held only by just over 100 individuals in the world.

Accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare in Assessment, Research, Systems Integration and Teaching/Education, STEPS encompasses 20,000 square feet of instructional space that includes four ICU setups for high fidelity manikins; two 10-bed open lab spaces for practicing nursing, Basic Life Support and ultrasound skills; 12 patient exam rooms for physical diagnosis and communication; a room for OB and pediatric practice; a large surgical skills unit; an operating roomand more. The Standardized Patient Programprovides students with an opportunity to work with members of the community who role-play a realistic clinical situation to help them learn and evaluate clinical skills.
